I asked my current pediatrician ( i have two other children) and he flat out told me I would not be able to take meds and breast feed the baby...I want her to breast feed but, i want to be safe also. I am starting to have anxiety attacks...not on any meds now. I did ask my OB if i could start taking them he said no....not sure what I am going to do....this makes it worse all around for me. Anyone have any insight to this kind of stuff?

I haven't specifically asked but my OB knows that I am on wellbutrin and plan to breastfeed and hasn't told me I need to go off of them yet - I am almost 27 weeks.

Good luck

I take Zoloft and was told by my OB that I can breast feed.

I am 16 weeks.

I took zoloft for 6 months post-partum while breastfeeding. You might need to find an OB who is more knowledgeable.

I've been on Prozac for the past 4 years for anxiety (originally put on it by my OB during my 1st pregnancy)and have been on it for all three of my pregnancies. My 2nd baby is the first one I tried to breast feed but no-one said that I couldn't because of the meds. I'm currently 28 weeks pregnant with my third and plan on trying to breast feed again and am still on the Prozac. Sorry I don't have a medically knowledgable answer, but so far my life's experience has been the opposite of what your Dr. says. I hope you get it worked out!

Just FYI on the Prozac, I pulled this info off safefetus.com:

"
  • Excreted into milk can cause toxic effects on newborn such as vomiting, watery stool, irritability and decreased sleep."

Yeah, after thinking about it I also decided to do some research and found this same info which was surprising to me! Thanks for posting it! Although my life's experience was nothing like this, I have a perfectly healthy and happy little boy who didn't suffer from any of these symptoms, I will certainly bring it up with my OB at my next visit in two weeks!

Well that's a relief that he didn't suffer from those things. I always check out meds on safefetus....even for breastfeeding purposes. If I plan to breastfeed, I won't be able to go back on my Cymbalta immediately after birth. I'll have to wait until I'm done breastfeeding. But I don't take Cymbalta for depression so I won't go totally crazy without it while I'm breastfeeding.

there are some that are ok to take while nursing a baby.  My doc is going to put me on Zoloft a month before I have my baby because I have had a bad case of PPD just after I've had my other 2 babies- and we're going to try and nip it in the bud this time before I have the baby.   I took it after I had my other two babies and I still went through emotional hell for 2 weeks until it kicked in.  I was on Zoloft after I had my 2nd baby for 3 months and nursed her for a whole year- and she is a happy and healthy 3 year old girl today.

You have to do what is best for you and it sounds like you need to be on meds for you to function.  I would go to a different doctor and get a second opinion, there are anti depressants out there that are totally safe to take while b/f a baby.   Sounds like he is a little closed minded and not considering your health too, along with your baby's.   I would look for a different doc if it were me, you need to both be on the same page in regards to your health and your baby's!
